Prospect Profile: Cooper Flagg
**Personal Information:**
- Name: Cooper Flagg
- Age: 18
- Height: 6'9"
- Weight: 190 lbs
- Position: Forward
- Nationality: American
**Strengths:**
1. **Versatility:**
- He has exceptional versatility, going between both forward spots seamlessly and even working as a primary ball-handler with a reasonable level of success. He offers some level of pop as a point-of-attack defender, depending on the matchup, but has elite disruption as a team/off-ball defender. He has the ability to be a Swiss army knife player but with the elite tools to make him genuinely special. Beyond that, he has a rare level of competitiveness that sets him apart from the large majority of his peers.
2. **Defensive Skills:**
- Flagg is an elite defender with strong instincts. He has quick foot speed and an impressive wingspan, enabling him to guard multiple positions effectively. His anticipation and timing allow him to disrupt passing lanes and contest shots consistently, making him a potential game-changer on the defensive end. He competes at all 3 levels and with his vision, IQ and athleticism he has no ceiling as a defender.
3. **Basketball IQ:**
- There is no situation on the court where Copper seems lost, even at 18 years old. He has a rare ability to slow the game down and show poise even in big situations. He consistently makes the right reads, is a vocal defender, and has the court vision to make the game easier for others. Flagg makes the game simple and has the tools and athleticism to expose the advantages he creates. He thinks the game is like a 10-year veteran, and outworks nearly everyone on the court he has a genuinely special ability to process the game.
4. **Shooting Potential:**
- While still developing, Cooper exhibits a solid shooting stroke, particularly from mid-range. His potential to evolve into a reliable three-point shooter will significantly elevate his offensive game and provide better spacing for his team. He has shown the ability to make technical alterations on the fly and implement them quickly. His shot form and mechanics have been altered significantly since the beginning of the season and the results have been excellent. Being a reliable shooter provides so much gravity on the court and will make his athletic advantages easier to access from play to play.
**Areas for Improvement:**
1. **Strength and Physicality:**
- Although Flagg is athletic, he needs to add strength to his frame. Increased physicality will help him finish through contact and hold his ground better against stronger opponents, particularly when battling in the paint. He has broad shoulders and great natural balance but added strength will make him even more versatile.
2. **Ball Handling:**
- While Cooper's versatility is a strength, improving his ball-handling skills will allow him to maximize his offensive contributions. Developing tighter controls will enable him to create his own shot more effectively and alleviate pressure from defenses so he doesn't need to be reliant on counters and spin moves to get to the basket. His game has natural gravity, he needs to accentuate that with high-level ball skills.
3. **Offensive Creation:**
- While Cooper can create for others, he must develop his ability to make plays off the dribble, seeking out opportunities to score rather than just facilitate. Expanding his offensive toolkit will help him thrive at the next level as a primary scorer, not just an elite #2.
**Projection:**
Cooper Flagg is a dynamic prospect with considerable upside. His blend of versatility, defensive prowess, and basketball IQ makes him one of the most intriguing young talents in the game. While he has areas to refine, his ability to think the game at a high level while also being an elite run and jump athlete makes him special. There is no ideal comparison for Flagg, he isn't the dynamic shot blocker AK47 was, and he is a far more developed offensive player but there are similarities. He doesn't have the same size and length (Yet) as Garnett. There are moments he flashes Pippen, and there are even moments his game screams 18-year-old Grant Hill, he is unique and has unlimited potential. He is both the safest prospect in this draft with essentially no low-end outcomes and also the highest ceiling player with the exception of maybe, Ace Bailey. Rare, special talent.
**Big Board:**
#1
**Player Comp:**
Scottie Pippen
