Prospect Profile: VJ Edgecombe
**Personal Information:**
- Name: VJ Edgecombe
- Age: 19
- Height: 6'5" (196 cm)
- Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
- Position: Shooting Guard
- Nationality: American
**Strengths:**
1. **Scoring Ability:**
- VJ is an explosive scorer with a knack for finding the basket. He has a picture-perfect jump shot with the potential to be a very high-level spot-up and pull-up shooter He excels at driving to the rim and finishing with authority, especially in the open court. He is an elite transition player already and has the on-ball potential to be a dynamic lead guard scorer.
2. **Athleticism:**
- Simply put, VJ Edgecombe is the best pure athlete in this draft class. His athleticism is one of his standout traits. He possesses great speed and leaping ability, making him a threat in transition and a consistent finisher on fast breaks. He has great bend and flexibility on both sides of the ball which gives him a long-term advantage over most other athletes.
3. **Defensive Skills:**
- Edgecombe showcases solid defensive fundamentals. He is capable of guarding multiple positions and has quick hands, allowing him to create turnovers and disrupt passing lanes. His shot-blocking and steal numbers as a guard are truly elite. He has the potential to be a premier POA defender at the next level. Worst case he should be an elite disruptor defensively.
4. **Work Ethic:**
- A Jalen Williams-like level of worker is the feedback that is consistently heard about him. High-level coachability, and is driven to maximize every ounce of his potential. Athleteic gifts like his mixed with the character traits he has are usually a great combination for elite development at the next level. Truly no ceiling as a prospect in my opinion.
**Areas for Improvement:**
1. **Ball Skills:**
- While he has unbelievable explosiveness in open court, VJ still struggles with half-court self-creation. He has a weak left hand and currently relies heavily on-screen navigation and his ability to essentially "out-athlete" college-level players. He needs to rapidly improve his ball skills and left hand so that he can profile as more than a second-side creator at the next level. Rim pressure will be key for him and without the ball skills he will never thrive in half-pcourt settings.
2. **Strength:**
- Adding weight to his frame will help him absorb contact when driving to the basket and improve his ability to finish through defensive challenges. Rim pressure and the ability to finish through contact will alter his trajectory as a scorer at the next level.
3. **Playmaking:**
- While he does a good job in transition and making good decisions with the ball, in half-court settings he struggles to consistently make the correct read while on the ball. He needs more reps on-ball to develop the necessary level of calm to make correct reads. The game moves quickly for him in the half-court.
4. **Defensive Fundamentals:**
- Although he has elite potential on the defensive end as a disruptor he needs to refine his footwork during screen navigation, especially on-ball. He struggles to work around high screen and roll sets and this will hinder him in his role as a point-of-attack defender. Also off-ball, he has a tendency, like many young athletes, to get ball watch far too often and get hurt by back-cuts and off-ball movement.
**Projection:**
VJ Edgecombe is an exciting prospect with an impossibly high ceiling. His scoring ability, defensive grit and athleticism make him a potential impact player at the next level. With continued development, he could carve out a significant role in the NBA as a future star in this league.
**Big Board:**
